I just upgrade my Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) to version 4.1.5.  DON’T DO IT unless you absolutely have to.

The upgrade went seemingly without incident in just a few minutes but email stopped working.  I have been trying to get it to work for over 4 hours (so far) today.  The BES is talking to “Blackberry Central.”  AT&T is not having a data outage.  However my Blackberry is not syncing email, calendar, tasks, or memos with the BES.  Blackberry Tech Support has been on the phone with me for 2 hours and I’m no closer to a solution.  I’m not ever going to upgrade the server again unless I absolutely have to.  Blackberry tech support is $250 for a single incident, and no doubt they CAUSED this problem!

Update:  Because AT&T is my carrier (and a proud sponsor of the 2008 Tour de Georgia!) I was able to go through them to get through to Blackberry tech support without charge to fix the issue.  About 12 hours of tech support later, the server was back operational!  I also lost data to the incident, although I don’t think any data lost was “mission critical.”  Although I followed the installation instructions, one instruction was omitted that may have caused part of the problem.  The main problem, however, was caused by Microsoft Active Directory and the new BES version and something to do with administrators being protected groups and the “send as” permission not being inherited by those users in a protected group.  Just another example of security entrapping the secured while allowing the lawless freedom.
